Banking when you move abroad

How to open bank accounts, use multi-currency cards, and move money when relocating abroad when relocating. Practical setup before you land.

Getting paid in one currency while spending in another is the default nomad problem. A little setup before you fly saves weeks of ATM fees and transfer friction on arrival.

Before you leave

Notify your home bank, confirm card foreign-use policies, and set up a multi-currency account or fintech card (Wise, Revolut, etc.) if your home bank charges heavily abroad. Keep a backup card on a separate network.

On arrival

Many countries require proof of address before a local account, a lease, utility bill, or employer letter. Until then, international cards and cash work; some nomads never open a local account for short stays.

Tax and compliance

Large transfers can trigger reporting obligations. Keep records of source of funds for visa and bank KYC. Jonzy's Services tab lists banking partners and setup steps per city.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a local bank account to move abroad?

Not always. Many relocators live on international cards for months. Long-stay visas and local tax registration often make a local account worthwhile.

What is the best card for digital nomads?

It depends on your home currency and destination. Compare FX spreads, ATM fees, and whether the card supports local currency wallets.

Is this financial advice?

No. Jonzy lists informational resources. Consult your bank and a financial adviser for your situation.
